Q: Do I choose my own Email address? How many characters? How many can I have?
A: You may select your own Email address in most cases, but cannot use trademark names (Coke, Sharp and Microsoft), or reserved names such as "alert", "help", etc. The general rule is that you use some combination of your first and last name. You must use at least four characters in your email name and the maximum you will want to select will be 8 characters. PortONE Internet includes one email box with your account (username@PortONE.com). Additional emails are available for only $2.49/Mo. for personal accounts and $4.99/Mo. for business accounts.

Q: Does PortONE support 56k & V.90 Technology?
A: Yes!  We are committed to both K56Flex and the ITU V.90 standard.  Our Connecticut network is V.90 and K56Flex compatible and our Nationwide network is V.90 and X2 compatible.  This means that if you are using a K56Flex, V.90 or a V.90-upgraded X2 modem, you can connect at 56k-type speeds (40K-50K realistically).

Q: I have a 56k modem; will I always get a connection of exactly 56k?
A: This question also applies to 28.8k modems and 33.6k modems. To answer this, remember that PortONE Internet has installed the highest quality equipment available to ensure that you get the best and highest speed connections possible. However, there are many things outside of our control and your control that may prohibit you from connecting at the top speed that your modem claims it can handle. Telephone lines, location, and modem quality all play a part in good connections. No Internet provider can claim that you will have top-speed connections all of the time, but PortONE Internet guarantees that you will get the FASTEST Internet access possible with your equipment. Q: Will I ever get busy signals?
A: Normally, busy signals are not an issue at PortONE Internet. We have a reputation of being the best Internet provider in Connecticut and we are continually adding new equipment to stay ahead of the user demand. Occasionally during abnormal events such as bad weather or important news events, our capacity may become strained for a few moments. If this happens, your software will simply re-dial our servers and you should get on the Net without any trouble.

Q: Do I get a personal web page?
A: Yes! PortONE provides 5 Megabytes of free web space - more than enough for even the most complex personal web pages. The address of your web site will be www.PortONE.com/username accessable via FTP (File Transfer Protocol). PortONE Internet maintains a strict AUP (Acceptable Use Policy) that you should review carefully before you start your personal web page. Personal web pages are just that - Personal. They are not for commercial advertising of any sort. The PortONE Web Presence is available for commercial projects.

Q: Can I have my own domain name?
A: Yes. If you currently own a company or operate an organization and you would like to personalize your email address with your company or organization domain name, PortONE Internet can arrange this for you. There are a couple of costs that you will need to be aware of. First, the domain name is obtained from the InterNIC and they will bill you directly for use of a name. The current cost is $30.00 per year (when buying 2 or more years). PortONE Internet charges a one-time fee of $50.00 (waived for 10-year registrations) to file or change, and add the domain to our DNS (Domain Name Server). Once this is complete, you have several options to exercise when you are ready: Virtual Hosting reliably puts your web page on the Internet using your domain name. Email Forwarding allows you to specifiy 5 name@domain.com combinations to be automatically forwarded to ANY Internet Email account.

Q: Why should I pre-pay for your service?
A: Like many other ISP's, we offer $20.99/month billed service.  However, we can dramatically save you money by not having to bill your credit card monthly.  You simply buy in bulk.  Since we offer a prorated refund at any time, you never have to worry about losing your money.  For what you spend in a year, you could have bought two!

Q: How do I know PortONE will be around in 3 years?
A: PortONE Internet will be Connecticut's largest ISP because with over 50years of combined Internet experience our staff knows how to treat our customers right and provide quality Internet service. We continually upgrade our equipment to meet the needs of Connecticut consumers for years to come.

Q: What are Tier-1, Tier-2 or Tier-3 providers and what difference will it make to me?
A: PortONE is a Tier 2 Internet Service Provider (ISP).  This means that when you are using PortONE, there is only one "hop" between our connection and the Internet.  Tier-1 providers are the Internet backbone and Tier-3 providers lease service from ISP's like PortONE.  Our connections are "peered" at 12 major cities across the country providing even faster access to and from world-wide information.  This means that you will not be waiting for others to access their data first.  In addition, if you use PortONE web page hosting, other internet users will be able to access your page much faster and without any unnecessary delays.

Q: How long can I stay connected?
A: You can stay connected as long as you are interactively doing something (surfing, E-mailing, downloading, etc.) with the account. PortONE Internet personal Internet accounts are designed for enjoyment, therefore we prohibit the use of any servers, as these are normally for business and not for pleasure. Accounts that are idle for over 20 minutes may quietly disconnect. This idle timeout is normal and should not inhibit your Internet experience at all.

Q: How many hours each month can I use?
A: As our standard Dial-up Internet Access is not the same as dedicated access, we offer the following quotas. For residential users, the quota is 150 hours per month (5 hours every day). For commercial clients, the quota is 300 hours per month (10 hours every day). By offering these quotas, we are able to keep our prices low and our service quality high. Unlike most other ISPs, if a user exceeds their quota, we do not cancel or suspend their account, nor do we charge $1.00 per hour over the quota. Instead, we will show a "high use surcharge" on their next renewal notice. The amount of the surcharge is calculated based on the amount of time the user exceeded their quota. If a user is using dedicated access, they will be billed accordingly.

Q: What if I'm a "Low Use" user?
If a subscriber uses significantly less time than their quota, we will automatically offer a "low use discount" on their renewal letter, proportional to the amount of time they actually use each month. These discounts usually range from 5% to 20%. We think it's only fair to offer such a discount for subscribers who don't use as much service as others.

Q: Can multiple people use this account?
A: You must never share your login name and private password with anyone. Your account can be used at work or at home, just not at the same time. However, multiple Email boxes can be shared and used under one main account. It's very important to remember that you are responsible for all charges incurred on your account.
